Solar Mounting Equipment
The mounting equipment that is used for a solar array can have a great effect on the output of the array. The simplest mounting structure is a fixed angle mount. With this type of mount, the solar module(s) remain at the same angle throughout the year. This type of mount is appropriate if the panel is going to be mounted somewhere where it is impractical to adjust throughout the year (Such as an alpine tower beacon). The best mounting angle for a fixed mount depends on location and should be determined before the purchase of a mount. If you live in an area where snow is received, take into account that the panel needs to be able to shed snow. The next type of mount is a variable mount. This type of mount will allow you track the sun's altitude depending on time of year or allow you to follow the sun's course from East to West during the day. You can also buy mounts that will allow you to do both.
There are three basic types of mounts:
- pole mount-fixed or variable
- roof mount-fixed or variable
- ground-fixed or variable
Taking the time and determining the proper mount for your particular application will greatly improve the performance of your array. Also, by choosing the proper mount, you can have a smaller array due to the increased efficiency that the mount affords.
Also, make sure you take into consideration of the type of weather you are going to be living with. The type of environment you live in has direct effect on the mounting structure that will best serve you. GP Wind and Solar is more than willing to help determine the best mounting and solar system for you; after all, that's why we're in business.
